The seasoned forward, an Arsenal academy graduate, experienced a remarkable resurgence under the guidance of Michael Carrick at Middlesbrough last season.
Akpom’s stellar performance yielded 29 goals in 42 appearances, propelling his team to the Championship Playoff semifinals.
His pivotal role and outstanding contributions caught the attention of European powerhouses, prompting a wave of interest.
Notably, the 27-year-old clinched the Player of the Year accolade in his final campaign with Middlesbrough, solidifying his status as one of the division’s standout players.
With one year remaining on his Teeside contract, Akpom decided to embark on a new chapter after a sensational season. Despite receiving an offer from French Ligue 1 outfit RC Lens, he opted for a move to Ajax, a decision that underscores his ambition.
Joining Ajax marks a reunion with fellow Nigerian player Calvin Bassey, making him the second Nigerian talent to grace the club within as many seasons.
Under the terms of the deal, Ajax will make a guaranteed payment of €12 million to Middlesbrough, augmented by an additional €2 million in potential add-ons for the versatile forward.
Akpom’s mission at Ajax is clear: contribute to the team’s quest to regain the league title, following a challenging 2022-23 season marked by upheaval, including the departure of captain Dusan Tadic who terminated his contract at Johan Cruyff Arena.
Having committed to a five-year agreement with the Dutch giants, Akpom will soon join his new teammates after successfully completing medical evaluations.
The transfer marks a significant step in Akpom’s career, and his integration into Ajax’s dynamic squad is eagerly anticipated by fans and football enthusiasts alike.
