The Falconets of Nigeria were sent crashing out of the ongoing FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica as they lost 2-0 to their Netherlands counterparts.
The Nigerian side had earlier shown class and promise in the group stage as they maintained a one hundred percent record going into the knockout stages but their hopes never saw the light of day. Coach of the Falconets, Christopher Danjuma has called on Nigerians to remain hopeful in the team as he expressed the belief that there is a future in the present U-20 team.
The gaffer went further to apologize to Nigerians for their support especially those who burn the midnight candle just to see their national team play. Nigerians were full of hopes that this set of players will do the nation proud as talents are enormous from the back to the forward but no thanks to the ravaging Netherlands. “Nigerians really stayed up that late to watch the matches. We targeted the sleepless nights.
“Nigerians will not be wasted and make sure we deliver. That’s why after the match the girls were weeping. It was just a sad moment. We wanted to give Nigerians something. We wanted to give them more than they can ever think. We want to say thank you Nigeria for burning the candle sticks at night for us. And there is a better time, especially with this future of players we have.” Danjuma says.
The Falconets had defeated France, South Korea, and Canada in the group stage, making them one of the favorites going into the knockout stages but the Falconets failed to leave up to expectations.
