Stella Nwadiogo, a classroom teacher at Christ Mitots School in Ikorodu, Lagos State, has been indefinitely suspended after being caught on video assaulting a three-year-old pupil, Michael Abayomi. The incident, which went viral on Wednesday, showed Nwadiogo repeatedly hitting the child for struggling to correctly write the number “6.”
Following widespread public outrage and condemnation on social media, Nwadiogo was arrested on the same day. In response, the school management issued a statement denouncing her actions as unacceptable and contrary to the school’s values.
“The video circulating online depicts behavior that is entirely inconsistent with our principles,” the statement read. “Our priority is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all students, and such misconduct is intolerable.”
The management confirmed that the teacher has been suspended indefinitely while an investigation is conducted. “This reflects our zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct, particularly actions jeopardizing the safety and well-being of our students,” they stated.
The school also extended an apology to the victim’s family and assured them of full support during this time. “We have reached out to the family to address their concerns and sincerely apologize for this incident,” the statement added.
To prevent similar occurrences, the school announced several measures, including mandatory training on positive disciplinary techniques and child protection protocols for all teachers. Additionally, a confidential whistle-blowing system has been introduced to encourage reporting of inappropriate behavior.
