Chicago Sky Appoints D’Tigress Coach Rena Wakama as Assistant Coach

Chicago Sky has officially named Rena Wakama, the head coach of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, as an assistant coach under Head Coach Tyler Marsh.

The team confirmed Wakama’s appointment in a statement on its website, following the earlier additions of Courtney Paris and Tanisha Wright to the coaching staff.

“Rena has demonstrated a strong winning mentality and attitude,” Marsh stated. “Her success with the Nigerian National Team at the Olympics speaks for itself, building on an impressive track record in coaching and player development. She is a talented young leader who will bring immense value to the Sky’s program.”

Wakama made history with D’Tigress, guiding them to a remarkable performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Since her appointment as Nigeria’s head coach in June 2023, she became the first female coach to win the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title in August 2023.

Under her leadership, Nigeria reached the Olympic quarterfinals—an unprecedented achievement for any African basketball team, male or female, in the modern era of the Games. Her outstanding accomplishments earned her the Best Coach award from FIBA
