Female former quarter-mile athlete, Charity Opara has indicted Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN) over the country’s inability to clean medals at recent international events, because the production of new talents has been neglected.
Opara opined in an interview with sports247.ng that Nigeria is facing a decline in track and field fortunes due to the AFN’s failure to build on previously recorded successes.
She added that track and field used to be Nigeria’s forte in Africa and the world at large, especially in the sprints and quarter mile events, but laments the apparent laxity in building on those strengths.
Opara said: “If Nigeria wants to be recognised once more as a threat in track and field, then urgent steps must be taken to address the situation of the decline of Nigeria athletics that is presently going on.”
