The group stages of this season’s UEFA Champions League came to its conclusion on Wednesday night. Amongst the five Nigerians to take part, only Zaidu Sanusi progresses to knockout rounds.
Sanusi played all six group games for FC Porto as they finished runners up to Man City in C with 13 points. Sanusi scored once for Porto against Marseille in matchday 4.
The left-back formed part of Porto’s resilient defense that kept five clean sheets from their six games.
Sanusi continues to impress this season with consistent solid displays for the Portuguese giants.
Dennis Bonaventure and David Okereke drop to the Europa League with Club Brugge after the Belgian Champions finished third in Group F below Borussia Dortmund and Lazio and ahead of Zenith.
Dennis made four appearances contributing a goal and an assist while David Okereke appeared three times with zero goal contribution.
Frank Onyeka’s Midtjylland finished bottom of Group D consisting of Liverpool, Atalanta, and Ajax. The Danish Superliga champions finished with 2 points in a tough group.
Onyeka featured in all of Midtjylland’s games, putting up energic displays throughout.
Odion Ighalo was overlooked for much of Manchester United’s disappointing campaign. The Red Devils failed to progress from H after losing their last two matches against PSG and RB Leipzig.
Ighalo came off the bench in the 90th minute against PSG with Man trailing 3-1. That proved to be his only thirst for Champions League football and with his loan deal set to expire in January, Ighalo is expected to depart Manchester soon.
