English Championship club Cardiff City have been dealt a major blow with defender Jamilu Collins ruled out for the rest of the 2022-23 season.
The Nigerian international suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in a game against West Bromwich Albion on Wednesday night.
Collins suffered the nasty injury when he landed awkwardly trying to win back possession for his side just three minutes into the league encounter at The Hawthorns. He limped off the pitch and was replaced by Callum O’Dowda. The game ended in a goalless draw.
“We won’t see him again until next season. It’s gutting for the lad, really gutting,” Cardiff boss Steve Morison said of the left-back.
“We are all here for him. We are going to make the next year the best it can possibly be for him.
“It’s the worst-case scenario. We will try and get him back for pre-season next year. One thing we do know is we will have one hell of a left-back next season.”
Collins, 28, joined Cardiff on a free transfer in May after leaving German side SC Paderborn. He signed a two-year contract with the Bluebirds.
Before his season-ending injury, he had started all four league matches for the club to begin the 2022-23 campaign.
