Cannavaro, once named the FIFA World Player of the Year, emphasized that top European clubs, namely Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Manchester United, have their sights set on Osimhen should they seek to acquire a player from Serie A.
Osimhen’s remarkable performances this season have caught the attention of European powerhouses as they search for a prolific number 9. The Nigerian striker, a member of the triumphant 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup-winning squad, has dazzled with his scoring prowess, netting an impressive 31 goals in 39 matches across all competitions.
Notably, Osimhen played a pivotal role in Napoli’s recent Serie A triumph, securing the club’s first league title in 33 years.
His title-winning goal in a 1-1 draw against Udinese on May 4 propelled Napoli to glory, and the team had aspirations of Champions League success until their elimination by AC Milan.
While Napoli has extended a two-year contract offer to Osimhen, accompanied by improved terms, they remain open to the possibility of his departure if an exceptional offer for his services materializes.
Cannavaro emphasized that PSG and Manchester United are poised to make a substantial effort to secure Osimhen’s signature, should they decide to target a player from the Italian top flight. When questioned about Osimhen’s future, considering PSG’s ultimatum to Kylian Mbappe, Cannavaro conveyed to La Gazzetta dello Sport via Foot Italia:
“Undoubtedly, clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain or Manchester United—those in dire need of a center forward—will pursue a player from Italy if they choose to do so.”
“These are the prevailing forces in the market; there is no use deceiving ourselves. De Laurentiis has demonstrated sound business principles and organizational skills. He has successfully conveyed to the fans that one can effect change while maintaining competitiveness.”
Osimhen’s exceptional performance last season, which saw him net 26 goals in Serie A, earned him the distinction of being the fifth player in the last 30 years to win the Scudetto and the capocannoniere accolade in the same season. He joins the esteemed company of legendary players such as Marco van Basten, David Trezeguet, Andriy Shevchenko, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The intense competition for Osimhen’s services underscores his outstanding abilities and the recognition he has garnered within the football community. Napoli must remain vigilant as PSG and Manchester United loom as potential suitors, enticed by the Nigerian striker’s Serie A brilliance.
