Calvin Bassey’s competitive debut for Ajax did not go to plan for the Nigerian defender as he was sent off in the club’s 5-3 defeat to PSV in the Dutch Supercup on Saturday night.
He came on in the second half.
Ajax took the lead inside the Johan Cruijff Arena in the 16th minute via Steven Bergwijn but Guus Til levelled matters for PSV in the 32nd minute. Til grabbed his second goal of the night just a few moments before halftime to put PSV 2-1 up.
Brazilian winger Anthony netted an equalizer for Ajax soon after the restart to bring the Dutch champions back into the game.
In the 62nd minute, Bassey was introduced in place of Owen Wijndal with the scoreline level at 2-2. The €23 million-plus signing from Rangers marked his debut for the club in the process.
Ajax conceded two quick fire goals soon after, with Cody Gakpo getting his name to the score sheet and Til completing his hat trick in the 65th and 69th minutes respectively. Ghanaian
midfielder Mohammed Kudus pulled one back for Ajax with a well struck volley from outside the box in the 72nd minute.
Bassey was shown a yellow card in the 76th minute following a rash challenge on Ismael Saibari.
However, the decision was changed to a red card after a VAR review by the officials. The 22-year-old left the pitch just 17 minutes into his first appearance for his new club.
A late goal from Xavi Simons proved to be the final nail in Ajax’s coffin, as PSV won the cup 5-3.
