Patrice Motsepe, President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has confirmed that the African Super League will begin in August 2023.
Motsepe announced this at the confederation’s Executive Committee meeting on Sunday, which was also attended by Gianni Infantino, the president of football’s governing body, FIFA. The African Super League was first proposed by FIFA two years ago.
The competition will bring together the continent’s biggest clubs for an annual event and will run alongside the continent’s premier Champions League.
Motsepe claimed that the African Super League will ‘breathe new life into African club football’, adding that additional competition information would be revealed during the event’s official launch in Tanzania on the 10th of next month. He said:
“The decision has now been taken to implement the CAF Super League. It will start in August 2023 and we will launch it during CAF’s 44th Ordinary Assembly in Tanzania on August 10.
“We have been inundated with investors and sponsors, who are anxious to partner with us on the CAF Super League. It has huge potential to significantly uplift African football and to make it even more powerful.”
Motsepe went further to say that a significant amount of prize money will be awarded to the winners and competitors in the first African Super League, and all 54 CAF Member Associations will earn a sizeable share of the tournament’s revenue.
“We will be engaging with stakeholders over the next few weeks to discuss the mechanics of the tournament and will release further details shortly,” Motsepe continued.
“A significant amount of the money from the CAF Super League will be invested back into African football and part of the process involves giving $1 million every year to every one of CAF’s 54 Member Associations as a contribution to football and youth development.
“We also want to look to increase the prize money for the men’s and women’s CAF Champions Leagues,” concluded the CAF president.
