Bukola Olopade,founder and chairman of Nilayo Sports Management Limited,organiser of Access Bank Lagos City Marathon and JAC Motors Abeokuta City Marathon has recently disclosed in a TV interview that the 2021 Lagos City Marathon will be free as means of a soothing palliative to participants despite the uncertainties in the Covi-19 pandemic that brought about the cancellations of major marathons across the globe, the 2021 Lagos City Marathon would go ahead as planned as a virtual Marathon and open Marathon.
The decision is to ease the financial burden that has cost Nigerians as a result of the Covid-19 Pandemic but the 42KM race would be limited to the first thirty-five thousand participants to register similarly , in the 10KM , it would be limited to the first sixty thousand participants to register.
According to required regulations, the World Athletics requirement states that all top label races must charge participating fees .
The Lagos City Marathon was free, and it attracted over one million participants in the first four editions but there was a decline in the number of participants in the fifth editionĀ because of the introduction of fees.
