A former Commissioner for Youths and Sports in Ogun state, Honourable Bukola Olopade has congratulated Nigeria’s first World Champion, Tobi Amusan after winning gold in the Women’s 100m Hurdle at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA.
Amusan broke her World Record twice in the early hours of today, blazing to a 12.12 seconds in the semifinals to break the Old World Record by 0.08s before breaking her own 12:12seconds record by blazing to a 12:06(+2.5) in the final but cannot be legally counted as a World Record because she was aided by the excess wind.
The unexpected exploits in Oregon crowned the 25-year-old athlete as the champion of the world and she became the first-ever Nigerian to win Gold at a World Championships.
While speaking on the performance of Amusan, Hon. Olopade disclosed he is impressed with the strategy of Adopt an Athlete put in place by the Sports Minister, lauding the performance of Amusan and other athletes that represented Nigeria at the tournament.
“I am extremely proud of the Adopt an Athlete strategy of the Hon Minister. Without a doubt, I am very proud of the leadership of AFN and also of my great Egbon, Chief Solomon Ogba. Of course I am grateful to Gov Dapo Abiodun who adopted Tobi and finally, extremely proud of our Athletes for the hard work and relentless efforts all round.
Thanks to both women, a feel good factor permeates the air,” he said.
