Despite Everton’s loss to Chelsea in their Premier League opener on Saturday, Toffees manager Frank Lampard lauded Alex Iwobi for his outstanding performance.
Chelsea won 1-0 at Goodison Park thanks to a penalty converted by Jorginho in first-half added time.
Iwobi was deployed in central midfield and lasted the duration of the game. The Nigerian international was one of the best players on the pitch despite being on the losing end.
Iwobi had 82% pass completion rate. He also created two chances and won possession back nine times.
Speaking at his post-match interview, Lampard said of the versatile 26-year-old:
“I thought Alex Iwobi was brilliant in the number six role. Because of his attitude, personality and humility, it doesn’t matter [where he plays]. I thought him and Abdoulaye Doucoure played very well in midfield.”
Iwobi and Everton would be hoping to pick up their first win of the season when they travel to face Aston Villa on Saturday, August 13 in match week two.
