In a major boost for grassroots sports development, the Ogun State Government, through its Ministry of Sports Development, has presented subvention cheques worth a total of N16.5 million to 33 sports associations in the state.
Each association received N500,000 at a formal ceremony held at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta.
The financial support is aimed at strengthening the associations’ preparations for the Gateway Games 2024, the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, which Ogun State will be hosting.
Originally set for January, the event has been rescheduled to May 16–30, 2025, to allow for better preparations and facility upgrades.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, the Commissioner for Sports Development, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to nurturing sports at all levels. He emphasized that the subventions would help associations develop athletes, enhance training programs, and ensure Ogun State’s strong presence at the festival.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the state government to build a thriving sports sector, attract investment, and create opportunities for young athletes.
In line with this vision, Premium Trust Bank was recently unveiled as the lead sponsor for the Gateway Games 2024, marking the largest sponsorship deal in the history of the National Sports Festival.
With this financial backing and strategic planning, Ogun State is positioning itself to host a world-class sporting event while fostering talent and unity through sports.
