By: Eche Amos

The Board of the Nasarawa State Football Association has set up a Three-man Committee to investigate the rationale behind the hosting of a grassroots football tournament in Karu Local Government Area of the State.

Vice-chairman of the state FA, Hon. Haladu Akwashiki who inaugurated the Committee members said the decision to set up the Committee became imperative because the action of the organisers of the grassroots football tournament and Karu FA officials who participated in the competition went contrary to the directive of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 and the Nigerian Football Federation to suspend all football-related activities in the country.

“Despite the embargo placed on all football-related activities in the country by relevant bodies owing to the COVID -19 pandemic, we found a local FA wanting and so we have decided to set-up a committee to investigate them.

“We found out that despite the restriction, a football competition took place in Karu Local Government Area and some officials of the local FA took part in it.”

Haladu Akwashiki listed the Terms of Reference for the Committee to include to find out the nature of the competition, who gave approval for the competition, find out the numbers of affiliate clubs with the Karu FA, find out officials that refereed the matches, know the number of teams that participated in the recently concluded competition and suggest and recommend disciplinary measures, if any, to be meted to the offenders.

He charged them to carry out the task diligently and without fear or favour.

Reacting, Chairman of the inaugurated Committee members, Ahmed Bello Mohammed, thanked the Board of the State FA headed by Alh. Alkali Mohammed for finding them worthy of the assignment.

He promised that he and his team will work assiduously to deliver on the mandate given to them.

“I want to assure you and all football stakeholders in the State that we will do justice to the matter at hand and report accordingly.”

Other members of the Committee include Salau Zubairu(member) and Usman Ibrahim Oguns who will serve as the Secretary

The Committee is given one week, beginning from today, to submit its report.

In the meantime, the Chairman of Nasarawa State Football Association who also doubles as Nationwide League Chairman, Alhaji Alkali Mohammed, has inaugurated a five-man Nasarawa State Football Committee to be headed by his Vice Chairman, Honourable Haladu Akwashiki.

According to the Chairman, the Committee is saddled with the responsibility of formulating templates for football activities in the State post-COVID-19.
