Despite losing one of their top key player Eta Karo to rivals Alpha Airpop, 2021 Mindgames Scrabble Premier League champions Brainiacs have showed why they were the team to beat after they emerged winners of the Division A of Matchday One over the weekend in Lagos.
Over 100 players including former World Champion Wellington Jighere converged at the prestigious Lagos Country Club and competed as teams in the most glamorous scrabble league in Africa.
After about 13 hours of quality play, team Brainiacs led by Emmanuel Ofidi were filled with excitement after they discovered they had edged Airpop Alpha with a slim players’ result of 38 wins and 22 defeats after both sides finished neck and neck with 9-3 team scoreline.
The Airpoppers recorded 36 wins and 24 defeats from players’ results to finish second.
In other placements, Lekki Bombers finished third on the table while Bayelsa Maestros, Gracious Pickers Team A, Bulldozers, Indomitables and Tekena Drones occupied the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth position respectively.
Hurricanes, Phoenix, Supremes and Sterling Bombers completed the 12-team log in Division A.
In Division B, Southern Crowns laid a solid claim at the top after 10 wins and two defeats to finish as conquerors of Matchday One after 12 rounds of games.
Anagrammers, Aries, FPC Titans, High Flyers and Airpop Falcons placed second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth while D’Warriors, Encore Flamingos, Bayelsa Virtuoso, BSP Rangers, Matadors and Gracious Pickers Team B finished seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelveth respectively.
Meanwhile, stakeholders have commended the organisers Mindgames Incorporated for sustaining the MSPL which has now become a reference point for Scrabble tournament in the country.
The Matchday Two will hold on May 7 in Abuja when teams will continue their hunt for points and glory.
