Akwa United’s head coach, Kennedy Boboye, has issued a heartfelt apology to the club’s supporters following a challenging start to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.
The team has secured only one point from their last two home fixtures, drawing 1-1 against Bendel Insurance on December 9, 2024, and suffering a 1-2 defeat to Remo Stars on January 26, 2025.

Boboye, who led Akwa United to their first NPFL title in 2021, recently returned to the club in a mid-season managerial capacity.
He acknowledged the fans’ frustrations and took full responsibility for the team’s recent performances. “We aimed to win both home games and move out of the danger zone, but unfortunately, we fell short. I have challenged my players to step up and justify the immense support they receive,” Boboye stated.
He emphasized the importance of unity and resilience as the team prepares for their upcoming away fixture against Abia Warriors at the Umuahia Township Stadium on Sunday.
Boboye assured fans that the squad is ready to fight for all three points and expressed confidence that Akwa United would reclaim its rightful place in the league before the season ends.
The coach also lauded club chairman Elder Paul Bassey, under whose leadership he previously secured the league title in 2021.
Boboye’s return has been seen as a strategic move to revive the team’s fortunes, and he is calling on supporters to remain patient and continue backing the team during this transitional period.
As of now, Akwa United is positioned 19th in the NPFL standings, focusing attention on the urgency for a turnaround.
