Common Wealth Games bronze medalist, Islamiyat Yusuf has expressed her not too satisfied self in winning a bronze medal in the Weightlifting event of the games. Yusuf won Nigeria’s fourth medal in Birmingham by clinching the women’s 64kg category in Weightlifting with 93kg in snatch and 119 in clean and jerk.
Speaking to pressmen after the event, Yusuf expressed her dissatisfaction on her performance wishing she did more in what she refers to as performing far below what she did in camp. “I am partially satisfied but though excited for winning a medal in my first Common Wealth Games. I set a target of gold but God knows the best.”
Islamiyat Yusuf’s category had 12 competitors in what she considered as a very close contest but manage to come out third best. Since it’s her first time, the question was why was she expecting to outshine others, alongside the experienced ones. ” I did more in camp than what I did here at the games. My personal best was 103 so I don’t understand why 93 be my lift. I guess it has to do with me trimming down my weigh so I can complete in the 64kg category. I think that’s the reason.
As a promising sportswoman, Yusuf has vowed to do better in upcoming events, especially in the forth-coming National Sports Festivals. “I will train harder for the forth-coming National Sports Festivals so I can do better in my game.” She concluded. Yusuf futher dedicates her bronze medal to her mother and coaches.
