The first batch of Benue State’s contingent to the 8th National Youth Games has arrived in Asaba, the Delta State capital, to compete for honors at the age-grade sports meet.
The contingent, comprising 102 athletes and their officials, departed from Makurdi, Benue State, on Tuesday and traveled through the night, arriving in Asaba on Wednesday.

They joined their counterparts from other states for the screening process ahead of the competitions.
Addressing the contingent before their departure from Makurdi, Benue State Commissioner for Youth, Sports, and Creativity, Mr. Terkimbi Ikyange, urged the athletes to be resilient and courageous in their approach to every game to achieve commendable results.
He assured them that the government and people of the state were behind them in prayers and support.
Mr. Ikyange highlighted that the state government, under the leadership of Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Alia, is upgrading sports facilities at the Aper Stadium to ensure athletes have access to necessary equipment for training and competition. He encouraged the athletes not to disappoint the state.
Benue State Director of Sports, Dr. Philip Nongu, also encouraged the athletes to remain focused and determined in their participation.
He warned against acts of indiscipline and urged officials to pay close attention to the athletes’ welfare.
Speaking on behalf of the athletes, tennis player Lazarus Philip promised to represent the state effectively and make the people of Benue proud.
