Coach Monday Odigie shared his insights with the press, addressing the team’s performance, challenges, and the absence of their primary goalkeeper, Amas Obasagie.
Expressing his disappointment with the result, Coach Odigie acknowledged, “It’s not a result that we wanted, and that’s how football goes.
The first half of the game witnessed a lot of complacency from the Bendel Insurance players. As I mentioned earlier, a team with new players joining takes time to gel and understand how to play together, especially when players are coming from different clubs.”
Highlighting the importance of maintaining the team’s historical identity, Odigie emphasized, “Attitude-wise, they need to understand what Bendel Insurance stands for. What made Bendel Insurance stand out didn’t happen overnight, regardless of where you’re coming from. Mistakes were made in both halves of the game, but they managed to fight back in the second half and secure the draw.”

Addressing the absence of Amas Obasagie, who was called up to the national team, Coach Odigie asserted, “The team is not built around one player. This was the second goalkeeper’s first NPFL match. You can’t bench a goalkeeper performing well just to give others playing time. Football is a systematic progression. Hopefully, the goalkeeper will pick up and integrate into the team.”
Analyzing the goals conceded, Odigie attributed them to tactical lapses and indiscipline, stating, “That we conceded two goals was a general tactical and indiscipline, which I always tell people.
Every game provides an opportunity to learn and improve for the next one. Unfortunately, it went the way it did today. Missing our goalkeeper is a challenge, but the players are growing, and it should be a positive for the team.”
Looking ahead, Odigie conveyed the team’s commitment to their objectives, stating, “It’s a long league, and we are mindful of the task. We’ll keep working towards our objectives and focus on the next game, aiming to rectify the areas that need improvement.” Bendel Insurance will regroup, analyze, and strive for a more decisive outcome in their upcoming fixture.
