Bayer Leverkusen forward Nathan Tella has opened up about his disappointment after being left out of the Nigeria squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.
The 24-year-old, who has been in impressive form for the German Bundesliga side this season with one assist and four goals in 14 matches, was omitted from coach Jose Peseiro’s squad for the tournament held in Ivory Coast.

Speaking to Bundesliga International, Tella revealed his disappointment at missing out on the opportunity to represent Nigeria in Africa’s premier football competition.
Despite his hopes of making the squad, Tella ultimately watched from the sidelines as Nigeria finished as runners-up in the tournament.
Reflecting on his international experience so far, Tella expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play for Nigeria, noting that it fulfilled a lifelong ambition to compete at the highest level of international football.
“It was good playing for Nigeria. I have always wanted to play international football.
I never played international football when I was younger,” Tella told Bundesliga International
Despite his disappointment over the AFCON omission, Tella remains committed to representing Nigeria whenever called upon in the future.
With aspirations to continue his impressive performances at Bayer Leverkusen and earn more opportunities on the international stage, Tella’s determination and talent are sure to make him a player to watch in the coming seasons.
