Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports Development, Dr. Daniel Igali, has expressed satisfaction with the organization of the ongoing Governor Douye Diri Preseason Football Tournament in Yenagoa, the state capital.
Speaking to journalists after the conclusion of match Day Two, Dr. Igali praised the seamless execution of the tournament, attributing its success to the governor’s unwavering support for sports in the state.
Dr. Igali highlighted Governor Douye Diri’s commitment to ensuring that Bayelsa United performs admirably in the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.
According to him, the tournament provides an invaluable opportunity for teams to assess the progress of their squads, refine strategies, and evaluate player form ahead of the upcoming league.
“The tournament is not just about winning; it’s a platform for coaches to perfect their tactics and assess the readiness of their players,” Dr. Igali noted. He acknowledged that while Bayelsa United is still a work in progress, the team is gradually honing its strategies under the governor’s leadership.
The Olympic gold medalist extended his gratitude to Governor Diri and his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, for their continuous investment in the development of sports across the state.
He emphasized that such tournaments are vital for fostering a competitive spirit among local teams and preparing them to represent Bayelsa State on a national level.
Dr. Igali also noted the positive impact of the tournament on the community, stating that it has energized the local football scene, drawing significant crowds and boosting morale among young athletes.
He stressed the importance of maintaining this momentum to ensure sustained growth in sports within the state.
On match Day Two, Bayelsa United secured a 2-1 victory over Abia Warriors at the Samson Siasia Stadium. John Bassey opened the scoring for the “Prosperity Boys” early in the match, but Abia Warriors equalized before halftime. Rabiu Abdullahi’s late goal ensured Bayelsa United’s win, bringing them to three points after two games.
In other matches, Akwa United edged out Sunshine Stars 1-0, Kwara United defeated Krusaders FC by the same margin, and Bendel Insurance played to a 1-1 draw with Rivers United.
The tournament continues on Friday with four more fixtures, promising another exciting day of football. As the competition intensifies, all eyes will be on the teams as they fine-tune their tactics ahead of the NPFL season, with hopes that this preseason test will translate into a successful campaign.
