Bayelsa Queens’ Mercy Evawere Targets U20 World Cup, Plus Deal With Overseas Club

Bayelsa Queens of Yenagoa attacker, Itimi Mercy Evawere has put behind sad memories of her club’s inability to clinch any silverware this season, as she sets sight on playing at the upcoming FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup and then signing for a foreign club afterwards.

Evawere admitted that her next focus for the remainder of the year is with the Falconets, as Bayelsa Queens fell short in the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) and President Federation Cup.

While Edo Queens of Benin City won the league, with Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt and Naija Ratels of Abuja set to play the Federation Cup final next Saturday, Evawere declared that she is now thinking of shining at the Youth Mundial in Colombia.

Incidentally, the former Delta Babes, Abia Angels, and Ibom Angels dashing winger had been a key member of the previous under-17 national team, Flamingoes, during their age-grade qualifiers, hence her belief that she has what it takes to step up into the higher level.

Having also starred in the CAF Women’s Champions League and seen many days of success with Bayelsa Queens, Evawere is of the view that she is already ripe enough to play abroad.

That has given rise to her target of being part of Chris Danjuma’s Falconets’ squad for this year’s U20 Women’s World Cup, from August 31 to September 22 in Colombia, where Nigeria will play in Group D alongside Germany, Korean Republic and Venezuela.

“I hope to be in the Falconets’ team to the World Cup in August and score many goals for Nigeria so that I will catch the attention of scouts in Europe,” the fleet-footed winger enthused.
