Nigerian Veteran ex International footballer, Finidi Owen George nicknamed “The Gazelle” has called on all Sports stakeholders in the Nigerian Football fraternity to go back to the Grassroots to rediscover football talents who can adorn the green and white stripes at International tournaments.
Finidi born in Port Harcourt, Rivers State started his footballing career with Calabar Rovers of Cross River State made a name for himself at the international scene at Ajax in the Netherlands, where he won eight major titles including the 1995 UEFA Champions League expressed, optimism that Nigeria can return to its glory days of football if and only if everyone goes back to the drawing board of talent discovery and development from Grassroot Sports.
Finidi said, “Grassroot and youth football is the bedrock of any country’s football, as far as development is concerned.”
The 1994 AFCON winner stated, “A country that takes such policy serious, will never be out players and even teams that will compete at the highest levels in different categories.”
Finidi who is a certified UEFA A licensed coach from the Netherlands reiterated that, “We can get Nigeria back to the top of World football, if we channel our vision and focus towards scouting young talents all over the country.”
“When the scouted young talented players are given the opportunity to showcase what they have got, the onus now lies on the handlers and the regulators to harness the raw talents”, concluded Finidi.
Finidi George was an important member of the Nigerian Football team during the 1990s, appearing in two World Cups.
