Former Super Eagles left-back, Celestine Babayaro has forwarded a strong contrary view over recent criticism of Confederation of African Football (CAF) for leaving Leicester City midfielder, Wilfred Onyinyen Ndidi out of their 2018 all-star team.
While many Nigerians argue that Ndidi should have been in the list, but allege he was robbed by CAF, sports247.ng can report that Babayaro is of a view that the midfielder had not done enough to justify his inclusion.
In contrast with widespread views among Nigerian soccer fans and pundits, ‘Cele’ declared emphatically that Ndidi did not play better in the past year than the other three midfielders that were selected in the CAF Best 11 on Tuesday night in Dakar, Senegal.
Rather than flow with vastly popular opinion among Nigerians, Babayaro, who starred for Anderlecht of Belgium as well as Chelsea and Newcastle United of England during his heyday, stressed that Ndidi was not better than Thomas Partey, Naby Keita and Riyard Mahrez during the past year.
Babayaro countered, saying: “Ndidi didn’t do badly to be honest, but in 2018 Partey and Keita did more.
“(That was) mainly due to their involvement in the Champions League and Europa League, something Ndidi didn’t have with Leicester.”
