The final of the maiden Awo Cup Community Football Championship, sponsored by a Belgium-based youngster, Emmanuel Olakunle Awosanmi, will hold on December 26 at Bishop Aggey Memorial High School, Ilasamaja-Mushin, Lagos.
This was revealed to sports247.ng by competition director, Oscar Ezinwa Emmanuel, who also said 40 matches will be played in the group stage of the competition, from which eight groups will produce two teams each for the quarter-finals that will hold early December.
Among the teams competing for the top prize of AWO Cup 2018 are FC Robo, Young Starlets, Sports City and Super Stars in Group A, while Group B has MC Success, Potters FC, Abu Zico, God’s Revelation and Lyon Blessed.
Group C teams are Power FC, Favour FC, Satek FC, Whyte Success and Young Stars, while GFroup D has Sunny FC, Seemab Deji FC, Stallion Academy and FC Dynamites.
The sponsor, who was a key player with National Grassroots Dream Team before travelling abroad in 2003, said he wants to put something back to the community that produced him.
During his days in Nigeria, Awosanmi also trained regularly at Eko Boys High School, from where he was spotted by scouts of Nigeria Grassroots Football Federation (NGFF).
Aside being competition director for the upcoming contet, Ezinwa is also secretary-general of NGFF, hence his determination to make a success of the latest venture he has been assigned to carry out.
Ezinwa said: “I have experience of doing this at various levels before, even when I was in Ilorin with Chief Adolphus Okafor.
“I was also part of the success story of Orient Youth Sports Association at Volks Pitch in Ojo, Lagos.
“So, I am sure we will be able to put together a good competition for Awosanmi, coupled with the grace of God on our side.”
