Over 500 athletes currently participating in the ongoing Zaria Athletics Grand Prix which kicked off on Tuesday at the Ahmadu Bello University Sports Complex, Zaria, Kaduna state.
Director of the Grand Prix, Hon.Sunday Adeleye told newsmen that the 2-day event is geared towards professionalism and competition among athletes which in turn builds their confidence; as he regrets the lack of competition in track and field events.
“This event is geared towards bringing professionalism to our athletes who have been training without competitions, as this Grand Prix will give them the opportunity to test their fitness level. Also, this event is meant to prepare Nigerian athletes for the All African games, Olympics, and other major events.”Hon.Adeleye stated.
Speaking further, Hon.Adeleye thanked the host, Ahmadu Bello University, Hon. Ibrahim Shehu Gusau, Hon.Shehu Usman, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.
Grand Prix will feature events in 100m,200m,400m,800m,1500m,3000m, and 5000m.
Other events include; shot-put, triple jump, 4x 100, and 4×400(men and women). As winners will receive cash rewards.
