The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) is brimming with optimism as they anticipate a strong showing from Nigerian athletes at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Samuel Onikeku, the Technical Director of the Federation, expressed this sentiment while reflecting on the recent qualification of athlete Favour Ofili for the women’s 200m event.

Ofili’s impressive performance, according to Onikeku, was expected given her consistent form throughout the year.
He emphasized the significance of the Olympic Games, highlighting its quadrennial nature compared to the more frequent World Championships.
“Most athletes want to go to the Olympics because it’s once every four years. So if you don’t get it right, that is the end,” Onikeku explained.
The AFN is pleased with the overall performance of Nigerian athletes, with notable achievements across various disciplines.
Onikeku cited examples such as Ogazi’s impressive run of 45.2 seconds and Amaechi Obiageli’s milestone throw of 62.92 meters in discus, among others.
With athletes like Adaobi Tabugbo showing promise in the 100-meter hurdles, Onikeku believes the Nigerian athletic team is progressing smoothly.
He expressed confidence that the collective efforts of these athletes, coupled with meticulous planning and preparation, will culminate in one of Nigeria’s best performances at the Olympics.
As the Athletics Federation of Nigeria continues to nurture and support its athletes, Onikeku remains steadfast in his belief that their hard work and dedication will translate into success on the global stage.
