Aseperi Shina-Ayomi, a student in the advanced coaching programme at the National Institute for Sports (NIS), shared his views on the importance of backing women in sports during an exclusive interview with Sports247.
“I attended the NOC International Women’s Day program, and it was wonderful,” Ayomi said. “We were there to support our females. Even though it’s a women’s program, having men there shows that everyone recognizes how important it is for women to feel valued in this country.”

When asked about his own sports journey, Ayomi explained, “I am a football coach by trade, and coming to NIS is a great advantage. Many people dream of getting here, but I’m grateful to be among those who did. I played professionally in Osun with Gray FC and later with Prime FC, and I even had the chance to travel to Ecuador with Quinto FC. I started playing football when I was very young, and even though I faced injuries and had a knee problem, I never gave up.”
Looking forward to his coaching future, he added, “I’m praying that after finishing my NIS course, God will bless me with a good job. I plan to keep improving, from CAF C to CAF B and beyond, to become a great coach who can help develop football.”
On the topic of supporting women in sports, Ayomi emphasized, “There is a stereotype that women should stop playing once they become mothers. I believe men need to support women fully. For example, if a husband sees that his wife is passionate about her sport, he should back her completely.
Remember, when God created women, He took one of our ribs – they are a part of us. We must love, care for, and protect them. When women are happy and supported, everyone benefits.”
