“At first, we almost gave up, but we still thank God and give God the praise because it was not easy,” said Coach Victor. “I came with four shooters and, aside from one, all of them won medals.”

Team Cross River’s impressive haul included one gold medal in the male rifle category and two silver medals, one in the female rifle and another in the female pistol categories.

This marks a significant achievement as it is the first time Team Cross River State is participating in the youth games’ shooting events.

Coach Victor extended his gratitude to the Cross River State government and their governor, Sweet Prince Otu. “We thank the Cross River State government.

We thank our governor, Sweet Prince Otu. I can’t say much here until we get back home because I’m so excited here.”

When asked about the talent displayed by participants from other states and the prospects for the sport, Coach Victor was optimistic.

“For now, because it’s a new sport that’s just gaining familiarity in these parts, although the sport has been in existence for long.

From the progress we have made since we arrived here, I think the government is going to put more effort in at least supporting us so we produce more shooters for the state that would also partake in festivals and national shooting competitions.”

Team Cross River’s success at the youth games highlights the potential for shooting sports in Nigeria and the importance of continued support and development for young athletes in this discipline.
