ASABA 2024: Victor Effiong Okon Reviews Cross River State’s Karate Success

Coach Victor Effiong Okon of the Cross River State karate team shared his insights and the team’s progress at the 8th National Youth Games in Asaba, where they secured two bronze medals in karate.

In an interview with Sports247, Coach Okon explained that he was not with the team during last year’s games, though his colleagues were. Reflecting on the competition so far, he said, “It has been good so far.”

When asked about the number of participants, Coach Okon mentioned, “There are plenty. I cannot quantify, there are many. Everybody is in top gear, top spirit.”

Clarifying further, he noted that Cross River brought three participants in different weight categories, although initially, they were supposed to have four.

Discussing the team’s performance, Coach Okon expressed satisfaction with their readiness and efforts. “The team came ready, we were on top gear from home. They were ready to come here and win the medal. We got two bronzes. We were pushing for more.”

Highlighting individual performances, he stated, “We got two bronze medals, which is not what we expected, but we take it in good faith. It was a good fight for our participant in the -50 kg category.

This is his first experience on the mat, and he came out strong. The upcoming event next year, I’m sure the gold will be his.”

He also noted the challenges faced, including an injury from the first fight  to one of their participant,  Kevin Ogon Etta in the +50kg category, who still managed to win a bronze medal.

Unfortunately, their female participant who competed  in the -47 kg category narrowly missed out on a medal, losing to the host state by just a point.

Coach Okon remains optimistic about the future, emphasizing the team’s determination and potential for better results in the coming events.
