As Team Nasarawa continues their quest for a first medal at the 8th edition of the National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, their athletes have shown commendable resilience and determination to deliver on the expectations.
On Saturday, the Boys’ Hockey Team made a strong statement by defeating Team Bayelsa 2-1 in their first match before thrashing Team Borno 3-0 in their second Pot B fixture at the Hockey Pitch, Okpanam.
These victories place them on the verge of qualifying for the semi-finals, with a crucial game against Team Delta awaiting on Sunday. A win would secure their spot in the next round.
In contrast, the Girls’ Hockey Team faced a tougher challenge, suffering a 0-2 defeat to Team Edo in their opening game. Despite the setback, the girls remain motivated to bounce back in their upcoming matches.
Boxing brought further cheer to Team Nasarawa’s camp, as Auta Yusuf Abdullahi dominated his Enugu State opponent in the 42kg Boys’ Category, winning by technical knockout in the third round.
His Coach, Nnamdi Osuji, was pleased with the victory and expressed hope for more success as Abdullahi awaits his quarter-final opponent.
Golf added to the team’s promising day as Godwin Friday secured a semi-final spot after defeating competitors from Delta State and FCT Abuja in match plays. He will face a yet-to-be-announced Kano State opponent on Sunday.
Another Team Nasarawa golfer, Sidi Ibrahim, put in a solid performance in the eclectic event, scoring 82 points. His coach, Olafemi Obamuwe, believes that with fewer shots on Sunday, Ibrahim could also be in medal contention.
Team Nasarawa, competing in 14 sports at the Games, remains hopeful of a breakthrough as the competition progresses.
“These performances show that our athletes are prepared to fight hard and make the State proud,” said Coach Sule.
