ASABA 2024: Olamide Tutu Owonifari Reveals Her Astonishing Gain From National Youth Games – “I Learnt Sign Language From Deaf Athletes”

An athlete from Lagos State, Olamide Tutu Lawal Owonifari has come out with a startling revelation as competitors, coaches, officials, journalists and fans take stock of the highpoints of this year’s National Youth Games on Asaba.

Although the lass who had lost her voice out of excitement admitted in a chat with Sports247 that she could not win any medal in the 100m and long jump events that she competed in, she can now communicate in sign language.

Owonifari disclosed excitedly that she made friends with some athletes who had hearing defects, and they taught her how to communicate with fingers, gestures and facial expressions.

She added, “The experience has been great, especially what we saw in the Games Hostel. It’s quite different from what we have in Lagos.

“I have also made friends with other people, and I learnt sign language from some deaf athletes.”

However, despite the fun she and other athletes had in the Delta State capital, Owonifari admitted she should have done better in the 100m race, but vowed to make up for it if she has an opportunity of representing Lagos State again in next year’s Games at the same venue.

Owonifari shared in the success of her teammates as she posed with a gold medal won by her fellow athlete as encouragement to spur her to do more in the next youth games.

“It was very interesting, but I could not win any medal, because I finished sixth in my race. I think I could have done better.

“That’s why I am going to train harder; so that I can come back here better and win a gold medal for Lagos State next year.” Owonifari projected.
