Mr Aigbe Osayomore Godfrey, the secretary of the Edo State Boxing Association, shared his insights on the future of boxing in Nigeria during the 8th National Youth Games.
Speaking to Sports247 at the Chaminade Hall in St. Patrick’s College, Asaba, where the boxing competitions were taking place, he emphasized the importance of nurturing young talent.
Mr Godfrey highlighted the promising future of boxing in Nigeria, especially with the discovery of fresh talent at the National Youth Games.
He stated, “It’s a very positive development. To truly cultivate excellence among these young people, you need to start early. By nurturing their potential at a young age, you can maximize their abilities and achieve the best outcomes, rather than waiting until they are older.”
He also used the adage, “A fish is best groomed when fresh because that is when it will take shape but when it is overgrown it will break when you try to groom it,” to stress the significance of grooming athletes from a young age.
He believes that starting training early will ensure that these youths grow into skilled and accomplished boxers.
The National Youth Games serve as a platform for discovering and developing young talents, ensuring the continuous growth and improvement of boxing and other sports in Nigeria.
