APOEL Nicosia, the dominant force in the Cypriot First Division, has made a significant acquisition by signing former Nigeria U17 international Fawaz Abdullahi.
The club made the announcement through an official press release on their website, revealing their intent to bolster their squad with promising talent.
Fawaz, a key member of the Golden Eaglets squad during the 2019 Africa U17 Cup of Nations in Tanzania, showcased his skills in four out of five matches under the guidance of coach Manu Garba. Now, the 20-year-old midfielder has committed to a three-year contract, binding him to APOEL until the conclusion of the 2025-2026 season.
The Nigerian talent commenced his professional journey with Israel’s Bnei Yehuda before making a move to Cypriot side Doxa Katokopias in August 2022.
During his time with Doxa Katokopias, Fawaz exhibited his abilities in central midfield, featuring in 25 matches across various competitions.
One of the standout moments of his season came when he delivered a decisive assist, leading his team to a 1-0 victory over Olympiakos Nicosia on April 13.
APOEL Nicosia, with an illustrious history of 28 Cypriot First Division titles, holds the record for the most championships in the country.
Additionally, the club reached the quarterfinals of the 2011-2012 Champions League, marking their greatest achievement on the European stage.
Fawaz Abdullahi’s signing highlights APOEL’s commitment to nurturing young talent for the future. He will be registered on the club’s B list for the upcoming season, with APOEL recognizing his potential and investing in his development.
Notably, APOEL has previously been home to esteemed Nigerian players. Michael Obiku, a retired Nigerian international, and Benjamin Onwuachu, a former Juventus youth team player, both represented the Cypriot club in the past.
Football enthusiasts will be eagerly anticipating Fawaz’s performances in the APOEL jersey, as he joins the ranks of a club renowned for its success and rich footballing heritage.
The three-year deal presents an opportunity for the talented midfielder to grow and make his mark in the competitive world of Cypriot football.
