Former Secretary General of Commonwealth, Emeka Anyaoku has called on government at all levels to give sports development a top priority in order to curb social vices perpetrated by youths in the society.
Anyaoku disclosed this at the 14 edition of the grand finale of the U-16 Inter State Emeka Anyaoku Cup held on Sunday at the FIFA legacy pitch of the national stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
Cargo Boys from Oyo defeated Strike Force from Enugu state 3-1 to emerge as champions.
While commended both finalists for their good performance, Anyaoku appealed to the government to pay attention to sports development saying that there are many talents that can be discovered and represent the country in future both international and continental football tourneys.
“Let me use this opportunity to appeal to the government at all levels to focus more on youth development through sports. If we can develop our sports at the grassroots level, the country would excel on the international stage. If we fail to do the right thing, sports may suffer in this country, I appeal to the government once again to give sports a top priority in other to curb social vices in our society,” he said.
Kalid Lawal opened the goal scoring for Cargo Boys in the 15th minute. Strike Force from Enugu got their equalizer through David Miracle.
The second half witnessed a tension-soaked game as Cargo Boys scored two goals through Fowosade Ayinde and Suwe Azeez to confirm their supremacy over the opponents.
