Chairman, Anambra Sports Development Commission (ASDC), Mr. Toni Oli has revealed that 225 athletes are already in camp ahead of the upcoming National Sports Festival scheduled to hold in Edo from Dec. 3 to Dec. 17 at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium as the state aims to exceed its previously held records.
As stated, the athletes who will be camping in three sites; Rojenny Stadium Oba, Otuocha Township Stadium, Aguleri, and Bishop Obiefuna Retreat Centre, Awka including 50 officials, would stay until Dec. 3 and leave for Benin, the Edo capital.
The Anambra contingent holds a record of five gold, 11 silver, and 13 bronze medals, which placed the state in the 16th position on the overall medals table at the last edition in Abuja.
The state aims to ensure that the success in Abuja was consolidated upon, assuring the people of Anambra that the athletes would be supplied all their needs to excel at the Games, tagged “Edo 2020”.
“We are working to better our last performance which was five gold, 11 silver, and 13 bronze,” he said.
Despite the COVID-19 lockdown negative effects on the state sporting activities apart from the Nigeria Police Games, which held in February, other state events like Academic Football Competition, Community Shield, Security Games, and School Sports did not hold.
Tony further lauded the athletes over their concerted efforts to keep fit regardless of the ban as they push for more records in the 2020 NSF while he also called on officials fair officiating so as to ensure that the best efforts are crowned and duly awarded.
