The duo, along with other elite athletes from around the world, have descended upon Eugene, Oregon, United States, for the highly anticipated 2023 Wanda Diamond League final set to take place this weekend.
In the wake of their recent setbacks at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, star athletes Tobiloba Amusan and Ese Brume are gearing up for a shot at redemption on the global stage.

Last year, at the same hallowed venue, Tobiloba Amusan, affectionately known as the ‘Tobi Express,’ took the athletics world by storm. Not only did she clinch gold in the fiercely competitive 100m hurdles at the World Championships, but she also etched her name in history by setting a blazing new World Record of 12.12 seconds in the event.
Her remarkable achievements instantly catapulted her to the pinnacle of sporting stardom in Nigeria and across the entire African continent.
Now, all eyes once again turn to the track in Eugene, Oregon, as the world awaits to witness if Amusan can transform her recent disappointment in Budapest into a glorious triumph in Oregon.
For seasoned Nigerian sprinter, hurdler, and jumper turned coach, Seigha Porbeni, the Diamond League final this weekend presents a perfect opportunity for Amusan to reclaim her pride in the 100m hurdles. “Yes, Oregon is Amusan’s chance for revenge,” he affirmed.
Porbeni, who serves as the Head Coach of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), acknowledged the highs and lows that accompany participation in the World Athletics Championship.
He emphasized that the Diamond League final in Oregon offers an ideal platform for Amusan to replicate her dazzling performance from 2022.
Porbeni shed light on the challenges Amusan faced in Budapest, citing mental and physical hurdles stemming from an AIU suspension and training disruptions.
However, he expressed optimism, believing that three weeks of recovery since leaving Budapest have likely allowed Amusan to regain her mental and physical strength.
Furthermore, the format of the 2023 Wanda Diamond League Final, which consists of a single race, plays to Amusan’s strengths as a tenacious competitor and fighter, leading Porbeni to confidently predict a triumphant day of sweet revenge for the Nigerian hurdler.
Notably, Amusan’s record-setting feat in Oregon last year, where she clocked an astounding 12.12 seconds in the semifinals and a marginally wind-assisted 12.06 seconds in the final, remains fresh in the minds of athletics enthusiasts.
Meanwhile, fellow Nigerian athlete Ese Brume, who narrowly missed the medal zone in Budapest with a fourth-place finish, also returns to Oregon, where she secured a silver medal during the 18th World Championships last year.
Despite a less-than-spectacular season, Brume remains in contention for the Long Jump top prize at the Diamond League final.
As the saying goes in the world of sports, anything can happen on the grand stage, and Brume, known for her resilience, is poised to seize the opportunity presented by the Diamond League final in Oregon to make her mark once more.
