Amuneke’s AFCON Hopes Dented By Lesotho

Former Super Eagles winger, Emmanuel Amuneke found his hopes of taking Tanzania to next year’s Africa Cup of Nations dented by a loss against Lesotho, which means the Nigerian ex-player-turned-coach at The Taifa Stars are now in danger of missing out.

Amuneke will now need a massive win in his team’s last match of the qualifiers to scale through, after Lesotho stunned Tanzania 1-0 in the 2019 AFCON qualification Group L match at Setsoto Stadium in Maseru on Sunday.

The victory took Likwena to second place on the group standings, while Amuneke’s Taifa Stars slipped to third place on the table.

The two teams came into the match hoping to boost their chances of qualifying by securing a victory on the day.

Likwena and Taifa Stars launched attacks in the first half as they looked to break the deadlock, but they could not score and the score was 0-0 at half-time between Lesotho, and Tanzania.

The hosts looked dangerous on the counter-attack with Taifa Stars doing most of the attacking after the restart in Lesotho’s capital city.

The visitors’ defence was left vulnerable at the back at times and they punished by Likwena with 14 minutes left on the clock.

Nkau Lerotholi proved to be Lesotho’s hero as he snatched a late goal to hand the hosts a narrow win at home against Amuneke’s wards.
