Aliyu Umar Discusses Super Eagles Squad and Coaching Aspirations

Aliyu Umar, a coach from Kebbi State currently enrolled in the advanced coaching program at the National Institute for Sports (NIS), has shared his thoughts on the Super Eagles’ squad selection for the upcoming World Cup 2026 qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Rwanda.

Speaking in an interview with Sports247, Umar explained his reasons for joining the NIS program despite already running his own football academy. “I have an academy, Grassroots Football Academy, in my state. But I came to NIS to gain a coaching certificate so I can become a full-time professional coach,” he said. “I want to be proud of myself and contribute to my community by developing young talent.”

When asked about the selection of the Super Eagles’ final squad list, Aliyu Umar expressed full support for the coach. “I don’t have much to say about it. The coach has the power to select players and do the lineup. He called the best he thinks can deliver for us, and I wish them the best of luck,” he stated.

However, he voiced strong opinions on the exclusion of Ahmed Musa from the squad. “Musa deserves to be in that team. He is far better than some so-called professionals in the squad, especially in the attacking lineup. I won’t mention names, but some of these players have been given multiple chances and have not delivered. Musa should have been given an opportunity,” he argued.

Despite the controversy surrounding the squad selection, Umar remains confident in the team’s ability to secure victory in both matches. “I believe in the players I saw on the list. They will deliver with passion, prayers, and the full support of Nigerians. Regardless of background or religion, I trust they will get the job done,” he concluded.

As the Super Eagles prepare for their crucial qualifiers, the debate over squad selection continues, but optimism remains high among coaches and fans alike.
