Team Nigeria had a good outing at the just concluded African Wrestling Championship that was hosted in the capital city of Algeria, Algiers.
The two-day tournament saw a rise in ranking for Nigeria’s big names Odunayo Adekuoroye who will now be ranked world number 1 in the 57kg category after claiming her fifth African Wrestling Championship.
Adekuoroye defeated highly rated Egyptian, Eman Ebrahim 10-0 in the Nordic bracket finals to claim the gold medal for the fifth time at the championship to gather 18 points which pushed her to world number 1 ahead of Risako Kawai from Japan.
Teammate, Blessing Oborududu also had a good outing at the championship after claiming her tenth gold medal at the 68kg category to rise world number 2 on the new rankings.
Team Nigeria’s five men contingent won 1 gold, a silver and 2 bronze medals, while the ladies claimed 6 gold and 4 silver medals making it 14 medals overall.
