Silver medalist at the Algiers 1990 AFCON, Emmanuel Okocha had disclosed the reason why the team performed well at the tournament despite being without experience.
Emmanuel Okocha scored the consolation goal in the 5-1 bashing by Algeria in the first match.
He narrated on Instagram live yesterday that after the heavy defeat to Algeria, they had to throw everything at it.
” After the defeat, we were all quiet and moody because we thought it was over. We were inexperienced, the big boys didn’t honour their invitations. Then, Westerhof told us it is not so bad, since we still had two games to play before we could be knocked out. He said we just needed to win.”
“After those words, we recovered from the defeat and got back to training, went on to defeat Egypt and Ivory Coast, defeated Zambia in the semis and got to the finals.” He elucidated.
The bulk of the players at the tournament were home based players which included Emmanuel Okocha and Rashidi Yekini.
