The Chairman and the entire Akwa United football family deeply sympathize with the management, staff and players of Enugu Rangers over the tragic death of their players in an auto crash along Onitsha-Agbor-Benin road.
In a reaction, Chairman of Akwa United Elder Paul Bassey described the sad incident as a “very unfortunate and terrible moment for the entire football family in Nigeria”,
“We are saddened by the news of this tragic and unfortunate incident which has claimed the lives of footballers in our country. This is a big loss not only to Enugu Rangers but to the entire football fraternity.
“Since the announcement of the suspension of all football related activities in the country due to Coronavirus pandemic, players and officials of clubs are on break and many have traveled to be with family and friends, but it is unbelievable, heartbreaking and shocking to hear that Ifeanyi George and his friends lost their lives on their way home in such a tragic manner along Onitsha-Agbor-Benin road.
” It is ironic that the league was suspended to save lives only for this to happen. Exactly two weeks ago, we lost Chineme Martins of Nasarawa United who slumped and died during a league match, the Coronavirus is ravaging the world and nearly all human activities including the NPFL have been shut down, and today, we lost footballers in a car crash. We are indeed in trying times and I wish to use this opportunity to call on the entire football family to unite in prayer for God to have mercy and protect us.
“All of us at Akwa United join the entire football family to pray for the peaceful repose of the soul of Ifeanyi George and his friends, and for God to grant their families, Enugu Rangers, Nigeria Professional Football League and the Nigeria Football Federation the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss”.
