The Chairman of two-time Federation Cup Champions Akwa United Football Club Elder Paul Bassey has applauded the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 for the suspension of ban on contact sports including football as part of preparations for the commencement of the 2020/2021 Nigeria Professional Football League Season.
Elder Paul Bassey commended the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Nigeria Football Federation and The League Management Company for their efforts in ensuring the lifting of the ban on football which has been under suspension since March following the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic.
According to Elder Bassey, “the announcement of the lifting of ban on contact sports is coming to us as a blessing because we have been without football for too long.
“I wish to congratulate the major stakeholders for all their efforts in making sure that football is back. This is a clear sign that we will get back to the field of play anytime soon but I want to appeal to the League Management Company LMC to expedite action on league resumption especially for the benefit of clubs that will be representing the country in continental tournaments” the club boss prayed.
Meanwhile, the management of Akwa United have confirmed that the club will take part in the second edition of Governor Nyesome Wike pre-season football tournament to be played in Port Harcourt, Rivers State from October 30 to November 10, 2020.
In a letter of acceptance signed by the secretary of Akwa United comrade Omon Bassey and made available to the organisers of the tournament, the Promise Keepers have expressed willingness to play in the twelve days pre-season tournament which will also feature teams like, Rivers United, Enyimba International, Plateau United, Abia Warriors, Nasarawa United and MFM of Lagos amongst other.
In preparation for the tournament, the Promise Keepers will commence full blown training in Uyo and Coach Kennedy Boboye may likely engage his men in some test games before making the short trip to Port Harcourt for the pre-season tournament.
