Akwa United are mourning the death of their former manager, Maurice Cooreman who passed away at the age of 79 in the early hours of Tuesday, 31st May 2022.
The news of his death was announced on Tuesday by the League Management in a Facebook post: “Our condolences to the family of Maurice Cooreman following his passing in Belgium.”
Mourning the coach who took Akwa United to their first-ever continental outing in the 2016 CAF Confederation Cup, the Chairman of Akwa-based football club, Paul Bassey described the late Belgian as a dynamic, passionate football coach and a good ambassador of the sport in a statement released on Wednesday, signed by the club’s Media Manager, Mfon Patrick.
The statement reads;
“We are saddened with the news of the death of coach Maurice Cooreman. A man who worked with me as the Technical Adviser in my first year as chairman of Akwa United FC in 2016.
“Cooreman was such an experienced, dynamic, and passionate coach with a deep and wide knowledge of the beautiful game at all levels.
“Cooreman worked in nearly all the regions in Nigeria and his understanding of the game of football made him a standout tactician who achieved success during his time in the country.
” Cooreman will be missed not only by Akwa United but by the entire football fraternity. As we mourn, we pray to God Almighty to grant him eternal rest, while granting his family, friends, and associates the strength to bear this irreparable loss”.
Cooreman who primarily coached in Africa had stints with other NPFL clubs including Enyimba, Ikorodu United, Warri Wolves, Gombe United Ocean Boys which he led to the NPFL title in 2006.
