Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi’s performance in his debut for Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs against arch-rivals Orlando Pirates ended in a 1 – 1 draw at the First National Bank stadium on Saturday in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
Akpeyi made series of saves in the encounter to keep the away team at bay while his team took the lead in the 54th minute through Daniel Cardoso’s cleanly converted penalty while the Nigerian international could do nothing about the Pirates goal as he was rounded by Thembinkosi Lorch in the 80th minute of the game for the equalizer.
The Buccaneers were hoping to get a hatrick of wins over the Amakhosi having already defeated their Soweto rivals twice in the season winning 2 – 1 in a league encounter before knocking the Phefeni Glamour Boys out of the Telkom Knockout semi-finals with a 2 – 1 scoreline. The draw has stretched the Pirates’ unbeaten run over their rivals to 11 – matches.
The Amakhosi signed Daniel Akpeyi from fellow PSL side Chippa United to shore up the goalkeeping position after captain and Bafana Bafana shot-stopper Itumeleng Khune picked up an injury that will see him out of action for a long time.
Kaizer Chiefs is currently 5th on the PSL table nine points off first placed team Bidvest Wits after matchday 20 with a total of seven wins, seven draws and six losses.
