Super Eagles’ third choice goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi has joined the clan of shot-stoppers with large numbers of the back of their jersey, as he has been given figure 40 at his new club, Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa.
Sports247.ng learnt that Akpeyi opted for the huge number, in preference for 16 and 22, which were said to be available at the club, which has Itumeleng Khune as their undisputed No.1.
Although Akpeyi did not don any number during his unveiling by the Johannesburg-based Chiefs, he turned up for his first two training sessions at the team’s Soweto district ground wearing jersey number 40.
The former Warri Wolves of Delta State and Heartland of Owerri keeper, who joined Amakhosi on January transfer deadline day from their Premier Soccer League (PSL) rivals, Chippa United, got down to the business of seeking a starting shirt on Saturday against Orlando Pirates.
Amidst fervid debate over whether he would be able to withstand the storm of a potentially feisty Soweto Derby so early on arrival at Chiefs, Akpeyi set about trying to convince the coach, Ernst Middendorp that he was up to the task.
Akpeyi was then in the spotlight once again, with pundits highlighting how symbolic it would be for the Nigerian shot-stopper to step out at FNB Stadium wearing jersey number 40.
