Akpeyi Dropped For Chiefs’ NedBank Cup Fixture

Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa new signing, Daniel Akpeyi will not be in goal for the club this weekend, when they battle Magic FC in the Nedbank Cup, sports247.ng reports.

This has been confirmed by the Johannesburg-based team’s coach, Ernst Middendorp, who disclosed that Akpeyi is cup-tied, having appeared earlier in the competition for his former club, Chippa United.

Middendorp disclosed further that Akpeyi will be rested for the game, while Bruce Bvuma will start in goal for Amakhosi at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday.

Akpeyi is not eligible for Amakhosi, as he played for Chippa United in the last 32 against Mamelodi Sundowns, a game The Chilli Boys won 2-1.

It means Akpeyi will not have an immedaite chance to consolidate on his gains at Chiefs, for which he made his debut in the Soweto Derby 1-1 draw against Orlando Pirates last weekend.

The Super Eagles’ third choice will, therefore, watch from the sidelines this weekend, as Bvuma gets an opportunity, while Virgil Vries, who made a couple of errors which cost Chiefs in league matches played in January, will be on the bench as back-up for the match.

Akpeyi, though, is still rated ahead of Bvuma, who has not made any first-team appearance for Amakhosi this season, playing mostly in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge.

It is now left to be seen how much of a challenge Akpeyi will face in his effort to keep his starting spot in the squad next weekend, as Bvuma will be itching to show what he can do on Sunday in the Cup fixture.

The 23-year-old is competing against more experienced goalkeepers in the team, so every chance he gets would be very valuable to him.
