First vice-president of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Barrister Seyi Akinwunmi has taken his mind way back to USA ’94 to recap some of his most memorable moments in soccer.
Though sports247.ng reports that Akinwunmi, who is also chairman of Lagos State Football Association, rated Russia 2018 World Cup as his best memory of the past year, the NFF top shot says he will not forget Yekini’s goal in a hurry.
Akinwunmi also cast his mind over some gains achieved by Nigeria in terms of soccer administration during 2018, and concluded that it was tough yet rewarding to be part of the long line of activities.
While rating the Super Eagles’ appearance at the Mundial in Russia as his greatest moment in Nigerian football in 2018, Akinwunmi acknowledged that it was a very busy year for the NFF, as the various national teams all engaged in different cadres of competitions.
Akinwunmi, though, admitted that that the only minus in the year was the crisis that the federation encountered after the World Cup.
He also pointed to controversy over the number of teams that should be promoted to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) as another low point, but expressed hope that all will soon be solved.
Akinwunmi said: “Football in 2018 was way above 80 percent (scorecard for the NFF) in my books.
“The past year was a busy one for football administration and interesting one for all the teams.
“For me, the best moment should be our appearance at the World Cup. The qualification was a special one and I cherish that a lot.
“In the year we were at the 2018 FIFA World Cup although the result wasn’t up to what we wanted but we did well.
“We qualified for the 2019 AFCON with a game to spare. A tournament we have failed to qualify for since we last played and won in 2013.
“Another greatest moment for me in football was the goal late Rashidi Yekini scored at the Super Eagles’ first appearance in the World Cup against Bulgaria in 1994.”
