D’Tigress player Evelyne Akhator has stated that she and other members of the Nigeria women national basketball team are leaving Spain with their heads held up high after finishing 8th at the just concluded FIBA Women’s World Cup.
Akhator speaking in a chat with Sports247.ng stressed that the Nigeria women’s national team got to the World Cup unheralded and left with a name having made a mark.
“We arrived at the World Championship as the tournament minnows, with nothing to lose but lots to gain,” the talented Akhator commented to Sports247.ng.
“The onus was on us to choose a path. I’m happy that we rallied and went as far as the quarter finals.”
“We are leaving Spain with a huge statement, having surpassed expectations and raised our heads high in a competition of this magnitude.”
She rued losing the 7th place classification game 73-72 to Canada.
“It was a game in which we controlled and dominated at a stage,” she recalled.
“I’m baffled that we let it off our grips. The match was one we didn’t deserve to taste the bitter pill of defeat.”
“There are other days to fight and correct the mistakes noticed in this championship.”
